TESSA Smith

Everything we do in life is for a reason. After having read the story of Tessa Smith, a 17 year old beautiful young woman and her family, our reason is to create awareness for and support the SickKids Innovation Grant for Pediatric Cancer Care and Research.

Sometimes, the most important stories in life involve sadness and suffering… but those stories also change and define your cause the most.

We are very honored and proud to know Tessa Smith, our hero and 2016 SickKids Patient Ambassador, and even more so, we’re inspired to be able to document her incredibly tough yet miraculous journey.

If there is one thing you can take away from Tessa and her family, it would be

“Never Never Never Give Up”

because in as much as life tests you, you have the ability to overcome those challenges and difficulties.

Tessa was diagnosed with Bilateral Retinoblastoma (RB), a rare form of cancer which affects the retina in both eyes, at the age of 3 and a half months. In addition to extensive chemotherapy, she also had to have her right eye removed. As Tessa’s dad described this time and experience to his wife, Annie, “We won the wrong lottery”. Then, at the age of 13, Tessa was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. For her parents, they won this ‘wrong lottery’ twice. What are the chances of that? Well, Tessa is among just 4% of children treated for Bilateral RB to develop this cancer. In 2012, she had to undergo Rotationplasty, which is a partial amputation of the limb in which the rest of the limb is rotated and reattached.
